Automation and Robotics for Quality Assurance

3D.aero GmbH is a technology company founded in 2017 and based in Hamburg that develops sensor, inspection and automation solutions for the aerospace industry and industrial coating technology. Its systems combine highly precise 3D sensor technology, intelligent data processing and robotics into integrated solutions: from µm-accurate surface inspection of aerospace components to programming-free robot path generation for coating processes and fully automatic 3D tool metrology using white-light interferometry. In addition, the company develops special-purpose machinery, custom automation solutions for large structures such as aircraft shells, and software for advanced automation, inspection and defect detection (3D.OS). 3D.aero emerged from a research project of the Institute of Aircraft Production Technology (IFPT) at Hamburg University of Technology in cooperation with Lufthansa Technik, employs more than 50 staff and is active internationally, especially in North America and Singapore. Since December 2024, the company has been a subsidiary of MTU Aero Engines; its customers include MTU Maintenance Hannover and FANUC.
