The Waste Management Company and its participations
The Waste Management Company of the Wetterau District (AWB) was founded in 1994 as a municipal enterprise of the Wetterau district and performs the duties of the public-law waste management authority. Through its participation in WEAG Wetterauer Entsorgungsanlagen GmbH (HRB 1827, AG Friedberg), it operates central facilities: the Entsorgungszentrum Wetterau (EZW) in Echzell with a mechanical-biological waste treatment plant (MBA), recycling yard, waste paper transfer station and storage facility for hazardous waste, as well as the humus and soil plant in Niddatal-Ilbenstadt with composting, an upstream digestion stage and a gas storage tank. At the Niddatal site, 36,500 t of bio and green waste are processed annually; from this, certified compost, peat-free soils and biogas electricity for around 1,700 households are produced. Ten recycling yards in the district, a bin service, the hazardous waste mobile as well as waste consultation and environmental education complement the offering. Material and energy recovery of the waste generated in the district reaches almost 100 percent; the WEAG site in Echzell is certified as a specialist waste management company.
