About the Zunftgesellschaft zu Schmieden

The Zunftgesellschaft zu Schmieden is a burger guild society in Bern and not an industrial enterprise. It supports its guild members with its own social service (Almosnerei), awards education and training grants and manages its assets through the Seckelmeister (treasurer). The society manages the properties at Schmiedenplatz 5 and Marktgasse 10; the guild house at Schmiedenplatz 5 houses the Stubenschreiberei (guild office) as its central administrative office as well as, since 17 October 2026, the Restaurant Schmied. The cultivation and promotion of the smith's craft is entrusted to the group Di Ysige, founded in 2003; for the younger generation there is the independent organisation Blacksmith. The guild council under the leadership of Obmann (chairman) Urs Reinhard is also the statutory social welfare authority for the society's members and, as such, is subject to the Oberwaisenkammer of the City of Bern.
